The 1872 election has kicked off, and it appears President Grant is on course for another sweeping victory. Republicans have held massive majorities across the nation since the Civil War, and it appears that this year shall be no different.

President Grant is a national figure, and one who is generally popular. As one of the leading generals in the Civil War, his rise to power in politics surprised no one as he won the Presidency in 1868. Grant won the last election by a wide margin in the Electoral College, but the 'popular vote' was much tighter. Since taking office, he has focused on Reconstruction of the South through military occupation, a much more aggressive stance compared to President Johnson.
Due to his aggressive Reconstruction, along with very strong claims of corruption in his administration, there is a growing divide within the Republican Party, as the Liberal Republicans have splintered off. Grant must keep the Republican Party together, put a wedge between the Liberal Republicans and Democrats, and keep the focus on his own popularity instead of charges of corruption.
