After being elected the first Democratic president in twenty-eight years, Grover Cleveland has worked towards civil service reform and tariff reduction. With Blaine rejecting another run, the RNC settled on dark horse Benjamin Harrison, a formidable orator from Indiana.
The main source I used to learn about the 1888 election was Minority Victory (2008) by Charles W. Calhoun, which is, as far as I can tell, the only modern book-length study dedicated entirely to this election. If you’re curious to learn more about this election, I would recommend checking it out first. As of this mod’s publication, it’s available for free on the Internet Archive.
To learn about the candidates, I read Calhoun’s Benjamin Harrison (2005) for the American Presidents series and Troy Senik’s A Man of Iron: The Turbulent Life and Improbable Presidency of Grover Cleveland (2022). Both were crucial to understand the deeply contrasting views on the role of government between Harrison and Cleveland. Calhoun’s biography is a bit shorter (but by no means inadequate), while Senik’s is longer and more in-depth.
To understand some of the particulars of Harrison’s day-to-day campaigning, I turned to “Trains, Canes, and Replica Log Cabins: Benjamin Harrison’s 1888 Front-Porch Campaign for the Presidency” (2014) by Jeffrey Normand Bourdon. The Eugene Debs quote was drawn from “General Benjamin Harrison -- Relentless Foe of Labor,” a speech he gave on October 27, 1888. Minority Victory provided sufficient information on the Republican National Convention, but I referenced the official proceedings of the Democratic Convention, available on Google Books for free.
Dcmetro, who did the Hyperion series deserves full credit for the writing and the idea to play as the campaign managers.
I wanna thank him for his patience as this was written for quite some time before it was coded...
...and of course, I want to thank you, the player. I hope you had a fun time and learned something new! Stay tuned for 1924!
After the Republicans lost their first presidential election in decades, the party has been looking for a new standard-bearer. The eloquent former senator from Indiana, Benjamin Harrison, fits the bill, having declared himself a 'Rejuvenated Republican.'
In contrast to Cleveland's conservatism, Harrison has big plans for the federal government, being an avid protectionist, a committed reformer, and a proponent of civil rights. He holds an advantage in the crucial swing state of Indiana, but he'll need an ambitious campaign to expose the president's weaknesses and take back the Executive Mansion.

His support for lower tariffs has alienated both industrial capital and labor, his vetoes of pension claims have infuriated veterans, and his hard-money stance has frustrated farmers. He's aligned with you on trade, helping to defeat the tariff-reducing bills in the House, and he brings personal wealth to the table, being one in a line of well-to-do bankers.

Bradley made headlines last year by running a strong campaign in the Kentucky gubernatorial race, losing the strongly Democratic state by just six points. Bradley has some delegates convinced that, should the party center its protectionism and shelve its more ambitious civil rights proposals, some Southern states might slide into reach.
For obvious reasons, Bradley would likely be an unwise choice; wholly snubbing both Platt and Blaine to choose a gubernatorial candidate from a state that went for Cleveland by double digits, in the hopes of swinging some southern states to your side -- which would require you to run a campaign deeply at odds with your personal values -- doesn't sound like a winning strategy.
