A WW2 veteran, he was tapped as Truman's Secretary of the Air Force and won his senate seat after his administration ended. He made himself known as a staunch opponent of McCarthyism, which makes him appealing to liberals.
However, he is a supporter of civil rights, which would complicate things in the south. Lodge would certainly make it harder to crack the south, but if you play your cards right you might not need the south.
