With assassinations of key American icons such as Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., chaos is brewing in America’s streets. Inflation is high and crime rates are higher. But, come January of 1969, only one person can lead the nation through the storm clouds.

Ronald Reagan is the incumbent Governor of California, having been elected in 1966. Although he is a relative newcomer to politics, his reach throughout the Republican Party cannot be ignored. After beating Nelson Rockefeller in the primaries, Reagan must unify his party and the nation, while wrestling attacks regarding his ideology and inexperience.

Hubert Humphrey is the incumbent Vice President of the United States, serving under President Lyndon Johnson. Humphrey must keep his “Happy Warrior” moniker alive by keeping liberals and moderates on his side. While he enjoys a small lead over Reagan, all isn’t well. His pro-war stance leaves much to be desired amongst liberals, but if cards are played correctly he can be the one sitting in the Oval Office.

Ronald Reagan is the incumbent Governor of California, being elected a short two years ago in 1966 over then-Governor Pat Brown. A conservative to the likes of Barry Goldwater, he was originally a New Deal Democrat, having been a Hollywood actor in the 1940s. Coming into the 1968 election, he was seen as true competition to Nelson Rockefeller, the incumbent Governor of New York and a liberal Republican. After losing the nomination to Richard Nixon in 1960 and Barry Goldwater in 1964, it was seen as Rockefeller’s time after Nixon said he wouldn’t run.

The candidacy of Reagan drew traction amongst the growing conservative wing of the GOP who opposed Rockefeller. With fierce campaigning from surrogates and himself, as well as pools of funding and his overall charismatic nature, he managed to beat Rockefeller at the convention. Now, he must enter the general election with a unified party behind him to defeat Hubert Humphrey and reclaim the presidency for the GOP.

Congratulations! You have won the 1968 election!

In one of the great turnarounds of American politics, you have salvaged your once-wrecked political career and shed your label as a 'loser' once and for all. As it turns out, the press will have Nixon to kick around.

If you can end the War in Vietnam and roll back the excesses of the Great Society, you may just go down as a truly great President. Good luck working with a Democratic Congress, however...

Sorry, you have lost the 1968 election.

Never has a candidate been so far ahead in a Presidential election, only to come up short. After your heartbreaking loss in 1960, it's going to take a long while for you to recover from this new defeat.

The American public will never know what might have transpired with you in the Oval Office. As it is, you are sure to enjoy a long retirement after this one...

Wow! No candidate holds a majority in the electoral college.

Wallace's machinations have succeeded. The election will go to the House of Representatives where the Democrats hold a clear majority.

You do hold some cards however -- Humphrey would certainly rather make concessions to you, rather than deal with George Wallace. Perhaps you could obtain a place in his Administration, or some assurances on a policy issue of your choice.

NOT PLAYABLE

Hubert Humphrey is the incumbent Vice President of the United States, being elected alongside President Lyndon Johnson in 1964. A New Deal liberal from Minnesota, Humphrey is a strong supporter of civil rights and labor unions. Before his ascension to the Vice Presidency, he served as Senator from Minnesota.

However, Humphrey certainly wasn’t the first choice of many Democrats. President Johnson was originally the frontrunner for renomination, but after nearly losing the New Hampshire primary, Johnson stated that he would no longer seek another term. To add to that, Robert Kennedy, brother of the late President John F. Kennedy, entered the race. After winning a few contests, Kennedy would be assassinated giving a speech at the Ambassador Hotel.

That meant Humphrey was the most mainstream and popular Democrat left, where he would earn the nomination at the tumultuous convention in Chicago.

It looked like a hopeless case as you accepted the nomination, but you have run an outstanding campaign in the interval.

Now you must press forward with your efforts to defend the Great Society and to end the war in Vietnam. Failure in the latter case could be devastating when you seek reelection in 1972. After all, just look at what happened to the once-lustrous reputation of Lyndon Johnson over the past four years...

Sorry, you have lost the 1968 election.

You may have performed admirably under trying circumstances, but it was always a tough sell for you after the chaos at the Democratic Convention in Chicago.

Your only consolation is that Nixon himself is a former loser. Even so, this is a horrednous turn of events for Democrats after the landslide of 1964. The best you can do now is to plot a comeback to the Senate, or as a candidate for President in 1972.

Fortunately for you the Democrats have won a majority of the nation's Congressional delegations. Unfortunately, you also have to deal with George Wallace. He will not allow the Southern states to support any candidate who advocates desegregation.

Your best chance, sadly, is to try to broker a deal with Nixon or with other moderate Republicans.

You are the likely winner, but who knows where this all ends?

You put in a good effort, but your dream of brokering an end to desegregation will not come to fruition in 1968. No winning candidate will negotiate that point with you unless they absolutely have no choice.

Nelson Rockefeller is the current Governor of New York and was your biggest opponent during the primaries. Originally the frontrunner, he was eventually defeated at the convention. Like Goldwater in 1964, beaten by a conservative. He will demand many concessions for an endorsement, let alone the VP spot. However, unlike Goldwater, he views you as more reasonable and less extreme. You will likely have to compromise on certain social and economic issues, such as a strong federal stance on civil rights and friendliness towards labor unions.

The United States of America enters the 1968 election with a tinge of fear and uncertainty. The Vietnam War is still raging, and protests are ever mounting. With assassinations of key American icons such as Robert Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr., chaos is brewing in America’s streets. Inflation is high and crime rates are higher. But, come January of 1969, only one person can lead the nation through the storm clouds.
