Moderates in both parties breathe a sigh of relief as conservative dark horse John Connally champions the Democratic nomination from a slate of various student-backed candidates.

The candidates are discussing how best to handle the war in southeast Asia, the federal budget, and other issues. Nixon leads in the polls, while Connally has a bit of a trust problem with the left.

Anyone paying attention sees this election for what it is: a disgraceful sham. America's nearing its final conclusion as an imperialist power - a veiled dictatorship with no real opposition, just the eternal controlled opposition of the party duopoly. Gus Hall, longtime leader of the Communist Party USA has had enough.

Hall used to be a staunch reformist, to the point that his party endorsed Johnson in 1964 to prevent Goldwater’s ascendancy. However, the coronation of John Connally at the Democratic National Convention has convinced Hall that an alliance with American liberals is impossible. At this point, the party's strategy has shifted to that of an open Presidential run once again - the way it was back before the depression. Hall will need to contend with both the chicanery the American state can throw at him as well as his own (numerous) character flaws if he wants a chance in hell of sparking the class consciousness he's dedicated his life to spreading.

Congratulations! You have won the 1972 Presidential Election.

Wow! This is the biggest political upset since Truman beat Dewey. It looked like your campaign was a hopeless joke, but what a comeback! You'll face stiff opposition to your policies from both parties, but clearly the country was at your side. Your victory speech was in front of an ecstatic crowd in South Dakota, and everyone could see the tears in your eyes. This is an astounding victory that political analysts will be studying for decades to come, and the climax of a chaotic past few years. This has completely shaken up the way the Democratic Party operates, and the next four years will be incredibly interesting to watch. Good luck with Vietnam, and here's to you. America came home.

Sorry, you have lost the 1972 Presidential Election.

It's hard to say this was unexpected, as you were always going to have a hard time beating President Nixon after the economic recovery over the past year.

Additionally, nobody knows where this leaves the Democratic Party after such a divisive primary and a huge lack of support from major Democrats in the general election. The party stands at a crossroads. The Republicans were able to not only turn around their devastating loss in 1964, but in fact fully embraced Goldwater's brand of conservatism to reap two major wins in a row. The Democrats may be able to do the same in 1976 and even 1980, if you put in a good fight with this election. Or, they could nominate a more right-leaning centrist candidate, in hopes of placating moderates. In any event, you can always go back to the senate. Hopefully Nixon stays true to his promise of bringing peace with honor, and can leave the White House with dignity in four years.

", "no_electoral_majority_message": "

Wow! You have won in a squeaker.

While the Electoral College ended in a tie, the Democrats have a large advantage in the House of Representatives and will likely elect you in that manner. However you may have to make some concessions if the vote ends up being close.

Angela Davis is an activist and academic from California. She gained folk hero status among activists in 1969 when she was fired from UCLA for Communist Party membership, further bolstered in 1970 thanks to the infamous Marin County Courthouse attacks in which her guns were used in a mass kidnapping incident, briefly making her a fugitive – indeed, Nixon called her a 'dangerous terrorist' upon her capture. Since her not-guilty verdict, she's spent time on the speaking circuit appearing in places such as Cuba and the Eastern Bloc.

Beyond being a highly intelligent woman and strong speaker, her connections to student groups and Black power organizations would help to mend wounds between the CPUSA and the activists of the New Left. Of course, most Americans who know her think she's some kind of terrorist, but maybe it's good that they know her at all.

Jane Fonda is a famous (some say infamous) actress known for her feminist and antiwar activism. She gained nationwide attention, most of it negative, with her visit to North Vietnam earlier this year in which a photograph of her sitting next to a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun earned her the nickname of 'Hanoi Jane.' This stunt has earned her the active revulsion of much of America, and her presence would generate massive amounts of media attention for the campaign. The phrase 'any press is good press' comes to mind.

Beyond the media circus, she’s something of an icon on the feminist left and would inspire attention and support from women and the New Left. It's worth noting that, while Fonda is willing to work with Hall, her commitment to the revolution is...not particularly strong, and her political chops are lacking. There will be friction between the Minnesota communist and the Hollywood star.

Bobby Seale is perhaps the embodiment of the Black Panther Party, and he's received unanimous condemnation from mainstream politics for it. Having co-founded the group with Huey Newton, he's seen his share of media attention, infamously being bound and gagged before the judge in the Chicago Eight trial – indeed earning contempt charges that will have him in prison to start the campaign. Among activists, his name is revered – among the general public, it's quite the opposite.

As a figure so unanimously popular within the Black Power movement, he would help to spread the Communist message within a key part of any coalition the CPUSA builds. His rhetorical ability is also unparalleled in the organization, and indeed far outstrip Hall's. He would generate large enthusiasm in the radical student population, where he has widespread support. Of course, there's no telling when they'll let him out of the slammer...

Edward Sadlowski is a labor leader who appeared on Hall’s radar following his 'Steelworkers Fightback' movement, in which he led a crusade against corruption in the United Steelworkers of America. He’s relatively unknown nationally, but romantically dedicated to the cause of labor and more agreeable to the general public than any of your other options will ever be.

Reconciliation with the New Left is largely regarded as CPUSA’s only path forward. If Hall has a strategy that eschews that, Sadlowski would be a powerful pick. Sadlowski would signal an old-left, blue collar turn to the campaign, perhaps rallying support among white ethnics – but no matter his progressive stances, he will always be viewed with distrust by the activist New Left that will be so vital to success. He will also do little to appeal to Black power organizations.

He is one of the Democratic Party's highest profile Hispanic politicians, and is a fresh face on the national scene. On the other hand, he is somewhat light on experience, and many argue that Trump's presence will ensure Democratic dominance of the Hispanic vote, regardless of Castro's selection.

HALDEMAN: We don't know for sure that they did it, sir.

NIXON: Like Hell we don't. (Sigh) We can't well have Humphrey or Muskie taking the nomination now, can we? (pauses) This is not good, Bob. We can't afford to have this backfire on us.

HALDEMAN: Agreed, sir. We'll handle it delicately.

They steadfastly believe that their primary task is to build a mass workers movement that will eventually overthrow capitalism. The New Left disagrees with this assessment. Rejecting the CPUSA's hierarchical structure and centralistic adherence to the party line, the New Left broadly favors a decentralized approach emphasizing direct action and social disruption. Viewing traditional left-wing organizations and organized labor with disdain and sometimes hostility, the mistrust is more than mutual.

In 1972 the New Left finds itself as the face of the American left. If Hall wants to somehow put together a successful coalition, he'll need to gain the support of student activists, anti-war protesters, Black Panthers, and other radicals.
