Reubin Askew is the current Governor of Florida, having first been elected in 1970 over incumbent Claude Kirk and again in 1974. Viewed as an outsider to some, Askew must press on Reagan’s unpopular domestic agenda and stick to his reformist beliefs to capture the trust of a nation. If he does it just right, it’ll be his election to lose.

The new lust for political power that has seeped into the mind and heart of the two most prominent conservatives in the nation…isn’t actually that new. With the patriarch once deeply entrenched in the politics of Mexico, it was essentially guaranteed that the children he’d sire would lust for the same.

The new dynast of this percolating desire, one James Buckley, has made it his goal to achieve the highest echelons of power. With the other face of conservatism not named Ronald Reagan firmly by his side and rooted in blood, it seems as if the reign of conservatism will continue unhindered and with a new warm, attractive face behind it.

Yet, something is wrong. The new prince of conservatism now finds himself in an uphill battle against a liberal machine hellbent on taking charge of the executive and yoking the only ideology that can save the nation.

Congratulations! You have won the 1976 Presidential Election.

Hopefully you can make good on your promises to clean up Washington and change the political and moral culture of the country. Sorry, you have lost the 1976 Presidential Election.

As an outsider candidate, this was really your moment to make an impact on American politics and to win a national election. Humility defeats cockiness. That’s what Reubin Askew learned, and has practiced it ever since. The youngest of six children, the boy grew up in a torn home. His father gone forever, never to return. Askew has endured strife and poverty, that Buckley boy ain’t get far without his pa’s money. A classic example of rugged individualism versus suffocating wealth. Underdog versus bully. David versus Goliath.

This career he has achieved, what he has worked for, was built off hard work. Reubin retains his humility, keeps his composure and flashes a smile. Florida deserved and he delivered, a repayment of the hospitality given to him when he first moved here as a scared youth. Now, the nation deserves. And he will strive to deliver, by any costs, once again.

“…let me be frank with you, James. That Bush gentleman might have the name recognition and résumé, but my Lord, he’s a political lightweight. He sat in silence for a moment, reading some more of the document in his hands. “However, he will probably cause a headache amongst your more hardline supporters, mostly due to some of his more liberal-oriented decisions as Governor of Massachusetts. But, not to worry. I still think we can win with him, God-willing.”

The current Governor of California, Jesse Unruh has been entrenched in the state’s politics since the 1950s.
