George H.W Bush is the incumbent President who took over after the shocking assassination of Ronald Reagan. While Bush’s approval initially surged following his predecessor’s death, his popularity has since waned largely due to his weak public persuasion. While coming from a wealthy background, Bush’s military experience has garnered him the reputation of a war hero, and he also has an extensive resume, serving as a member of the House, Ambassador to the UN, Chair of the RNC, Director of the CIA, and, for a brief moment, Vice President. He will need to emphasize this, along with his successes in office in order to keep the Reagan coalition alive. Will Bush be able to fend off Mondale and stay in the White House?

Well done Mr. President, you’ve secured your own full term!

While it started as a close race, you ultimately triumphed over Mondale and managed to secure your first full term. It seems with Reagan supporters rallying around you you’ve managed to keep Republicans in power for 4 more years!

You will have many options on how to govern over your next term; you can expand the War on Drugs, continue military interventions in communist countries like Nicuraugua and Grenada, increase military spending, or maybe cut some more taxes. Of course, none of it’s cheap, so keep an eye on those deficits. If the economy falters under your watch, you could set the party up for failure in ‘88.

Regardless, that’s for another Republican to deal with. For now, you can rest easy, knowing you have a long 4 years ahead of you!

\", \"electoral_loss_message\": \"

Unfortunately Mr. President, you’ve lost re-election.

While it was a close race, Mondale was able to unite the Democratic Party against you, winning him this election. While many conservatives are sad you couldn't repeat Reagan's success, you've lost with dignity and at least ran up some decent margins against Mondale.

The following four years will likely see the economy continue to improve. Mondale will probably focus on campaign promises like fighting the deficits, defending Government programs, negotiating a nuclear freeze with the Soviets, and maybe helping the struggling farmers in the Midwest. You could consider challenging Mondale in '88 if he fumbles badly enough, but otherwise, your political career is likely over.

Who knows, maybe there will be another President Bush sometime in the distant future?

Neither Candidate has received a majority in the electoral college.

Democrats control the house meaning you'll likely lose the election, but who knows, you could potentially persuade a Southern delegation or two if you tried hard enough - but be willing to make concessions.

On the upside, Republicans retain the senate and with it your running mate will become Vice President. Through some clever maneuvering, perhaps he or yourself could angle for a comeback in ‘88.

Maybe u shouldn’t have picked dan quayle as ur running mate dumbass

He worked well with President Carter, expanding his role, and is one of the better regarded aspects of Carter’s failed administration. Now he has returned as the Democratic nominee, facing off against incumbent President Bush. While early polling has shown Bush with a sizable lead, much of the initial sympathy for Reagan’s death has waned and a sluggish economy has allowed Mondale to make up some ground. Mondale must now unite liberals, moderates, and conservatives, playing up his record without falling to the popularity of his previous administration. The next 4 years are yours to do as you wish, so long as the economy continues to grow. You can focus on campaign promises like fighting the deficits, defending government programs, negotiating a nuclear freeze with the Soviets and helping the struggling farmers in the Midwest. If all goes to plan you’ll be able to run for re-election in 1988, but beware facing off against Bob Dole, Paul Laxalt, or maybe a re-match against Bush.

Victor Atiyeh is the Governor of Oregon. He grew up in Portland, Oregon, and went to college at UOO before his father tragically passed, and he returned home to provide for his family. From the late 50s to the late 70s, Atiyeh served in the Oregon general assembly, first in the house and then the senate. He then made a run for Governor in 74, Losing to incumbent Robert Straub before challenging him once more in 78, this time winning. Atiyeh became the first Arab American Governor in the history of the United States. Atiyeh has governed as surprisingly fiscally liberal while seemingly keeping a low profile on social issues. Some of his main focuses as Governor have been free trade, Worker's compensation, and solving economic and budget problems. Picking Atiyeh would help you in the West Coast, but his free trade policies would likely hurt him in the Midwest.
