George Bush aims to be re-elected in 1992 following the Persian Gulf War. The Democratic field, divided and without a clear frontrunner in the early days, has coalesced, in a shock, around George McGovern, the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972.
Hoping originally to be a candidate only if a younger, less battle-scarred candidate would emerge, the worst has seemingly come to pass for the Democratic Party. McGovern, who did not want to even become nominee, has found himself foisted upon it anyways, and now seeks to bring home a victory for the Democrats 20 years after his inglorious defeat.","image_url":"https://i.imgur.com/C3mc8U7.png","winning_electoral_vote_number":270,"advisor_url":"https://i.imgur.com/2w37R1H.png","has_visits":1,"recommended_reading":"
Comments, Sources, and Credits
I would put sources here, but I employed, for this mod, a completely different resource - the Google Newspaper Archive, which is a great resource for elections and certain long-shot candidacies that don't really warrant their own books or papers. I also used some of the New York Times Archives for this mod, especially this article, which provided the original inspiration for my making of this mod.
This mod was mostly just something to tide over my boredom, and it's been a way for me to tide myself over before going through another huge undertaking that I may or may not take. Either way, it was pretty fun researching and making this - I didn't really know much about George McGovern before I did, and I've gained some (probably useless) knowledge about him. I do feel like the writing in this mod could have been brushed up a little bit more, in retrospect - I didn't really do enough research, and I only made a few references to real-life events and figures in McGovern's life at the time.
I would like to give a very special thanks to Komnothun, who helped me greatly in making the mod - their wealth of knowledge on George McGovern and helpful comments on the writing and McGovern's positions was a great asset to me while making this mod. Without this help, the mod wouldn't be as it is.

Having run in 1984 in an campaign to not seek the nomination, but to move the party leftwards, McGovern sought, originally, to enter the field in 1992 unless a newer face seeks the nomination, in which he would drop out and endorse them. With no one coming out against President Bush in the wake of the Persian Gulf War, no one younger, for whatever reasons, has stepped forward since, creating one of the unlikeliest results in the history of Democratic presidential nominations.
George McGovern, thus finding himself with a nomination he did not want, nonetheless will run - he must try to appeal to a wide variety of voters unsatisfied with Bush, while also pointing out his own positions on the Gulf War.","color_hex":"#296fd6","secondary_color_hex":null,"is_active":1,"image_url":"https://i.imgur.com/dREnlcU.png","electoral_victory_message":"lmao","electoral_loss_message":"lmao","no_electoral_majority_message":"lmao","description_as_running_mate":null,"candidate_score":1,"running_mate":false,"scrollable":false}},{"model":"campaign_trail.candidate","pk":77,"fields":{"first_name":"George H.
