Martin O'Malley is a standard Democrat - on healthcare, infrastructure, and economics. As Governor of Maryland, he was a staunch Obama supporter during his administration, and sought the Democratic Nomination this year running on a pretty explicit pro-Obama message. After a tense primary and convention, Martin O'Malley was nominated to lead the party in a unified manner towards victory.
O'Malley must unify his party by ensuring that his balance between moderation and progressivism that worked well enough for him in the primaries continues to stick - and that this brand of politics works for a more general audience. He will have to build a nationwide reputation by staking his positions out on key issues - such trade, immigration, and foreign policy.

If O'Malley is looking to form some kind of national security credentials, and compete in Arizona, Napolitano would be a nice compliment. She would also help placate the female vote and make history as the first woman to be Vice President.
It's important to remember that Napolitano has been out of the public sector for a couple years, so she won't be of much help in the name recognition department. Of course, perhaps keeping a low profile would be smart against Trump.

His stances on trade could affect O'Malley's popularity in some regions, and he doesn't have nearly enough experience as typical running mates. Having neither a female or a person of color on the ticket may also cause some to feel disheartened. But given O'Malley's below-average appeal to midwestern, working class voters, Tim Ryan could be a smart choice if played carefully.
