With the fourth Rutte cabinet subjected to an untimely demise over immigration, the Dutch political landscape appears to be wide open for the first time in years.
Having entered the Dutch House of Representatives in the 2021 General Election with a single seat, the BoerBurgerBeweging (Farmer-Citizen Movement) has enjoyed a rapid rise in political prominence in the past years due to the influence of its down-to-earth lone MP, Caroline van der Plas. Her efforts culminated in a decisive victory in the Provincial Elections earlier this year, when they won a plurality in every province.
The BBB has taken its mandate seriously and now governs ten of the Netherlands' twelve provinces. However, since then their shine has faded a bit: Pieter Omtzigt threw his towel in the ring and the BBB seems to have failed to lure him into their party. Did the BBB peak too early? Or can it subvert the expectation that Omtzigt will take all of their voters?

However, the party has been subjected to a slow decline, with occasional temporary renaissances. Having been reduced to fifteen seats in 2021, just barely above the low point of thirteen seats in 2012, 2023 seems set to be another disaster. With its rural base forfeit to the BBB and other Christian Democrats defecting en masse to their nr. 2 from last time, Pieter Omtzigt, the CDA risks marginalization and over the longer term extinction. Can a new party leader safeguard the survival of an institution?

Since its creation, the party, which combines a progressive fiscal policy with a conservative social policy, has remained stable with between four and six seats. As the larger parties became smaller, this position has secured it a kingmaker position in three cabinets: the fourth Balkenende cabinet with CDA and PvdA, and the third and fourth Rutte cabinets. The 2021 election was the latest up, with D66 being its main winner, together with the VVD. GroenLinks' reduction to 9 seats in 2021 and the subsequent betrayal by D66's lack of insistence on GL and PvdA involvement in the cabinet has strengthened the push for a joint list between the two parties.

Following 2021, Jesse has proven himself an avid supporter of deeper cooperation between the PvdA and GroenLinks. A plan to get into government together was foiled when the big winner of 2021, D66, let go of its insistence on working with the two parties. Eerdmans was 19th on the LPF list and was consequently elected to the House of Representatives when the LPF won 26 seats, nine days after Fortuyn's death.
Having become the number two of the LPF, Eerdmans was re-elected to the House after the demise of the first Balkenende cabinet. By 2006, with the LPF in tatters, he tried to be re-elected with the new party EénNL, which failed. After that, he was active in municipal politics in Cappelle and then Rotterdam. After a brief stint with Forum, which he left before the 2021 election, he formed JA21 with fellow Forumite Annabel Nanninga. Since 2021, Eerdmans has led a small faction of two parliamentarians. The Netherlands use a nationwide list-based proportional system. After all the votes have been tallied, successive quotients are calculated for each party. The party with the largest quotient wins one seat, and its quotient is recalculated. This is repeated until the required number of seats is filled.
This method means every vote is worth nearly the same. It also makes it very easy for small parties to win seats. On the other hand, it is nearly impossible for a single party to win a majority of the seats.
